I met a lot of an Anti-‘s!

Cover of 1974 Anti-Psychiatry Resource Guide

Anti-psychotics were supposed to reduce my confusion.  Anti-depressants were supposed to reduce my depression.  Anti-anxiety medications were supposed to reduce my restlessness and fears.  Those weren’t the kind of “aunties” that you go visit on Sunday afternoon for tea and cookies.

I am not anti-psychiatry – I believe psychiatrists and medications can be important for recovery. But I’m not surprised that when people with mental illness began to question the wisdom of the doctors and the mental health system, we called it the anti-psychiatry movement.
